Why Did My Heat Pump in Peachtree City, GA, Freeze Up?

Notwithstanding the intense summer heat in Peachtree City, GA, given the right set of bizarre circumstances, it’s still possible for ice to appear on your heat pump. To fix this problem, you must understand its cause. Here are a few reasons ice might suddenly form on your heat pump:

Dirty Evaporator Coils

When your heat pump is in cooling mode, the indoor coils are the ones that function as the evaporator. Their job is to absorb heat from the air in your home that passes over them, but they can only do this if they’re able to make direct contact with that air. If a film of debris covers them for any reason, the amount of their surface area that touches the air will be much lower, and the amount of heat absorption that they can perform will correspondingly decrease.

Cleaning debris off of the evaporator coils is a typical job for an HVAC maintenance service technician. Other maintenance work, like tightening screws, cleaning valves and checking electrical connections, is also important. This is why you should remember to schedule maintenance for your system at least once per year.

Heat Pump Refrigerant leak

Refrigerant is the all-important substance that your heat pump uses to move heat around. Refrigerant should evaporate and absorb heat from the air in one area and condense and release it into another.

If refrigerant ever leaks, the system’s ability to do that will decrease. As a result, the temperature in certain parts of the heat pump will plummet, and stray condensation in those places may freeze.

Malfunctioning Blower Motor

If your system’s blower doesn’t work, its fans won’t be able to circulate air properly. Consequently, interior temperatures will drop and the likelihood of condensation freezing will increase.

Don’t let ice forming on your system alarm you. Call Scott Walker Heating and Air to schedule our heat pump services. We’ll ensure your system operates effectively and efficiently no matter the temperature outside.
